Class I – 10:00am – 1:00pm

Ethical Obligations in Providing Trauma Based Services to African-Americans and Other Minority Groups, (3 CEUs-Ethics/Trauma)

In this class we will look at how we work with People of Color, Native Americans, Immigrants, and Families Living in Poverty. We will gain a greater understanding of the traumatic history and present challenges in providing services to these populations. We will look at the impact of trauma and how it affects a populations ability to accept help from large and small systems that are available to address issues that society is currently facing.

Through interactive discussions, handouts, and group activities participants will develop the skills necessary to have successful services interactions within various practice settings; as well as, take action steps to create peaceful solutions to combat fear, trauma, and upheaval in the community. (This class was first taught at the 2017 Summer Mini Conference) (Trainer, Tara Rice, LCSW-C, Director, the TARA Center)

Believe it or Not!: Ethical Issues in Regard to Religion and Spirituality in Mental Health Treatment (3 CEUs – Ethics)

What do you do when a devoutly spiritual client comes to you, wants to include their spirituality in their treatment and you are not very familiar with their spirituality? What ethical issues are raised by treating people from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds? What ethical issues arise when you, as a provider, have strong religious or spiritual beliefs?
This interactive training will help participants understand the ethical issues that may arise in treating client from different religious backgrounds and how religious competency is an ethical issue. Participants will learn how to address a client’s religion and spirituality in an ethical way, if and when it is ethical to incorporate it into treatment, and some common issues pertinent to treating clients from different religions. Keepin’ It Real: The Ethical Dimensions of being “JUST” in a society that is still divided  (3 CEUs – Ethics)

This interactive training will explore issues related to social justice, and how the ethical codes and principles align with treating clients equally and fair. We will address how clinicians and practitioners are responsible for the moral and ethical treatment of clients: individually, and communally. There will be discussions on dispelling myths, stereotypes, generalizations, and microaggressions made by society that continues to oppress and marginalize certain groups.

This class will challenge clinicians and practitioners to understand how they play an important role in advocating for clients individually, locally, nationally, and globally, along with motivating them to be “change agents of justice.” This training will also review some ethical case scenarios related to social justice. (Trainer, Lisa R. Connors, LCPC, M.Div, MA, NCC, is a current member and past Co-Chair of the HIV Planning Group (HPG) for the state of Maryland, and a past member of the Board of Directors for the Maryland Chapter of NASW. She has also served as the Division President of the Maryland Association for Spiritual, Ethical, & Religious Values in Counseling, a division of the Maryland Counseling Association.)
