To Disclose or Not Disclose, That is the Ethical Question!

The therapeutic relationship can be enhanced by the rapport the therapist has with their client.  Yet some clients are easier to connect with than others. Can self-disclosure help with rapport building? Can self-disclosure help the therapeutic relationship or does it just lead down a slippery ethical slope?

This interactive training will explore these questions and more. Participants will look at our own personal values, examine case vignettes and explore how transference and counter transference can affect the efficacy of the therapeutic relationship. Believe it or Not! Developing Religious Competency in Mental Health Treatment

What do you do when a devoutly spiritual client comes to you, wants to include their spirituality in their treatment and you are not very familiar with their religion? Have you ever felt confused as to whether or not a client’s religion or spirituality was hurting them or helping them? Multicultural competency in the mental health professions includes knowledge of religious diversity. “Spirituality continues to be a salient aspect of human psychological functioning…” (Peidmont, 2004). Learning the basics of many religions and some foundational cross-cultural concepts and principles can equip you toward a more thorough religious competency.

This interactive training will help participants understand the basic teachings and practices of major world religions. Participants will learn how to address a client’s religion and spirituality, if and when to incorporate it into treatment, and some common issues pertinent to treating clients from different religions. The Penn State Factor: The Ethical Imperative of Mandated Reporting and the Devastating Effect of Cover-Up (3 CEUs- Ethics )

Few things are as heartbreaking and upsetting as learning of an occurrence of child abuse. It is even more disconcerting to learn of systematic abuse and the efforts by institutions to cover them up. It is often said that “the cover up is worse than the crime”. Yet time and again institutions and professionals choose to turn a blind eye to abuse or sweep concerns under the rug. This class will take a look at the abuse allegations and cover-up at Penn State University. Participants will look at reporting patterns and gain an understanding of what prevents people from reporting, and learn how to create an environment that encourages abuse reporting. Participants will learn the laws related to child abuse reporting and what constitutes child abuse in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. They will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons that people and institutions do not report events and an understanding of that impact on the institutions and children. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)
