Class 1 – 10:00am-1:00pm (3 CEUs – Cultural Competence) 

Evolving  Our Cultural Competence

Even great clinicians are only human. As professional as we are, it may sometimes require a lot of energy to maintain complete objectivity with our clients. We may begin to see red flags that remind us to take a step back. As we aim to help the client understand their own motives, values and beliefs, our best service comes from a place of objectivity. Is it possible to consistently attain this lofty goal? Is it possible to work with clients who display a real antagonistic attitude toward our own values and beliefs?

This class will add to our existing base of knowledge and cultural competence. We will explore and discuss the process of cultural competency that is continually evolving as society evolves around us. Believe it or Not!: Ethical Issues in Regard to Religion and Spirituality in Mental Health Treatment  

 

What do you do when a devoutly spiritual client comes to you, wants to include their spirituality in their treatment and you are not very familiar with their spirituality? What ethical issues are raised by treating people from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds? What ethical issues arise when you, as a provider, have strong religious or spiritual beliefs?

This interactive training will help participants understand the ethical issues that may arise in treating client from different religious backgrounds and how religious competency is an ethical issue. Participants will learn how to address a client’s religion and spirituality in an ethical way, if and when it is ethical to incorporate it into treatment, and some common issues pertinent to treating clients from different religions. Cultural Competency: Working with Foreign-Born Survivors of Human Trafficking (3 Category I CEUs)

Human trafficking is an issue that has gained increased attention internationally, as well as locally. In the Baltimore-DC Metro Area, there has been increased attention as service providers and law enforcement have identified more survivors of this horrific trade. With the increasing presence of international gangs from Central America and a growing multicultural region, service providers are coming into contact with an increasing number of survivors.

This interactive training will help participants understand the common characteristics of human trafficking cases, how to identify survivors, and how to appropriately work with individuals. Participants will learn the defining factors of human trafficking cases and the resources available to survivors. Practitioners will also understand the impact of culture can have on an individual’s worldview, and will be able to prevent common barriers when engaging clients.
