Class I – 10:00am – 1:00pm

Ethical Obligations in Providing Trauma Based Services to African-Americans and Other Minority Groups, (3 Category I Ethics/Trauma CEUs)

In this class we will look at how we work with People of Color, Native Americans, Immigrants, and Families Living in Poverty. We will gain a greater understanding of the traumatic history and present challenges in providing services to these populations. We will look at the impact of trauma and how it affects a populations ability to accept help from large and small systems that are available to address issues that society is currently facing.

Through interactive discussions, handouts, and group activities participants will develop the skills necessary to have successful services interactions within various practice settings; as well as, take action steps to create peaceful solutions to combat fear, trauma, and upheaval in the community. Believe it or Not!: Ethical Issues in Regard to Religion and Spirituality in Mental Health Treatment

What do you do when a devoutly spiritual client comes to you, wants to include their spirituality in their treatment and you are not very familiar with their spirituality? What ethical issues are raised by treating people from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds? What ethical issues arise when you, as a provider, have strong religious or spiritual beliefs?

This interactive training will help participants understand the ethical issues that may arise in treating client from different religious backgrounds and how religious competency is an ethical issue. Participants will learn how to address a client’s religion and spirituality in an ethical way, if and when it is ethical to incorporate it into treatment, and some common issues pertinent to treating clients from different religions. Friends, Pokes and Tweets: Ethical Considerations Online and In Person (3 Category I Ethics CEUs)

“Do you have children?”, “Are you married?”, “Will you be my friend on Facebook?” Boundary issues with clients and ethical considerations have only become more complicated in recent years. With the extent of personal information that is available on the internet, clinicians need to be cautious about what information is available to their clients.

Participants will evaluate appropriate uses of self disclosure by viewing examples of therapy sessions from popular movies and television. Participants will become knowledgeable of the 10 things clinicians need to know about privacy on the internet and how to protect themselves. This information will assist clinicians in making ethical decisions related to self disclosure. (Trainer, Annie K.
