Few things are as heartbreaking and upsetting as learning of an occurrence of child abuse. It is even more disconcerting to learn of systemic abuse and the efforts by institutions to cover them up. It is often said that “the cover up is worse than the crime”. Yet time and again institutions and professionals choose to turn a blind eye to abuse or sweep concerns under the rug.

This class will take a look at the abuse allegations and cover-up at Penn State University. Participants will look at reporting patterns and gain an understanding of what prevents people from reporting, and learn how to create an environment that encourages abuse reporting. Participants will learn the laws related to child abuse reporting and what constitutes child abuse in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. They will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons that people and institutions do not report events and an understanding of that impact on the institutions and children. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)
