The Courageous Therapist! Four Brave Actions to Guide Clients Effectively Through Difficult Times

Clients who are going through crisis and mental health problems need therapists to be strong leaders who can provide guidance and support.  Yet, it can be challenging for therapists to consistently have the courage and the knowledge to be a client’s guide through the valleys of life.  Therapists benefit from knowing sound principles they can use to provide strong leadership, guidance, and hope to troubled clients.  In this training, therapists will learn to Identify actions to effectively utilize themselves to motivate and encourage clients. You will learn strategies to help clients overcome the stigma of seeking mental health treatment and more!   (Trainer: Dr. Stephanie Weiland Knarr, LCMFT, author, Dr. Stephanie’s Relationship Repair for Couples, host, The Relationship Repair Shop Radio Show)

This training will offer prevention counseling skills that can be implemented in a variety of settings to minimize the rate of infection among African Americans. The training will include discussions on dispelling myths, stereotypes, generalizations, and microaggressions made by society. This training will motivate social workers to be social justice “change agents” and advocates for the rights of individuals at-risk of contracting HIV and living with HIV. (Trainer, Lisa R. Connors, LCPC, M.Div, MA, NCC,  has served in the HIV field for 20 years,  a current member and past Co-Chair of the HIV Planning Group (HPG) for the state of Maryland, and past member of the Board of Directors for the Maryland Chapter of NASW. The Penn State Factor: The Ethical Imperative of Mandated Reporting and the Devastating Effect of Cover-Up

Few things are as heartbreaking and upsetting as learning of an occurrence of child abuse. It is even more disconcerting to learn of systemic abuse and the efforts by institutions to cover them up. It is often said that “the cover up is worse than the crime”. Yet time and again institutions and professionals choose to turn a blind eye to abuse or sweep concerns under the rug.

This class will take a look at the abuse allegations and cover-up at Penn State University. Participants will look at reporting patterns and gain an understanding of what prevents people from reporting, and learn how to create an environment that encourages abuse reporting. Participants will learn the laws related to child abuse reporting and what constitutes child abuse in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. They will gain a deeper understanding of the reasons that people and institutions do not report events and an understanding of that impact on the institutions and children. (Trainer, Jeffrey Davidson, LCSW-C, LICSW, Director CE You!)
