Class 1 – Changing our Lousy Stories: Designing an Outlook free from Preconceived Notions (3.5 CEUs)

The human brain is filled with a startling concoction of stories about ourselves and the world that swarm in and out of consciousness at the speed of light. Unless we take time to shed light on our stories, our lives can be driven by old conclusions that do not serve us well in the present.

In this class we will look at the function that stories provide for our brain. We will look for the same qualities in the mix of “truths” embedded in DSM diagnoses, and increase our awareness of how our narratives about illness can actually limit healing.

Participants will fine-tune skills to help clients become aware of the sequels running through their brains, rewrite stories that do not serve them well, and move from a reactive stance to one where they are inspired to redesign their lives. Luncheon Presentation, The Courageous Therapist: Four Brave Actions to Guide Clients Effectively Through Difficult Times (1 CEU)

Clients who are going through crisis and mental health problems need therapists to be strong leaders who can provide guidance and support.  Yet, it can be challenging for therapists to consistently have the courage and the knowledge to be a client’s guide through the valleys of life.  Therapists benefit from knowing sound principles they can use to provide strong leadership, guidance, and hope to troubled clients.  In this lunch time lecture, therapists will learn to Identify actions to effectively utilize the self of the therapist to motivate and encourage clients. Class 2 – Ethical Obligations in Providing Trauma Based Services to African-Americans and Other Minority Groups, (3 CEUs)

In this class we will look at how we work with People of Color, Native Americans, Immigrants, and Families Living in Poverty. We will gain a greater understanding of the traumatic history and present challenges in providing services to these populations. We will look at the impact of trauma and how it affects a populations ability to accept help from large and small systems that are available to address issues that society is currently facing.

Through interactive discussions, handouts, and group activities participants will develop the skills necessary to have successful services interactions within various practice settings; as well as, take action steps to create peaceful solutions to combat fear, trauma, and upheaval in the community. Class 3 – HIV Today: Prevention, Treatment, and Ethical Considerations (3 CEUs)

After more than 30 years of an HIV Epidemic, what have we learned? This class will take a look at the current situation in DC and Maryland regarding HIV. We will look at current ideas on HIV prevention and ethical issues that still arise in our work with the HIV positive population. (Trainer, Lisa R. Connors, LCPC, M.Div, MA, NCC,  has served in the HIV field for 20 years,  a current member and past Co-Chair of the HIV Planning Group (HPG) for the state of Maryland, and past member of the Board of Directors for the Maryland Chapter of NASW. She has also served as the Division President of the Maryland Association for Spiritual, Ethical, & Religious Values in Counseling, a division of the Maryland Counseling Association.)

Class 1 – Believe it or Not!: Ethical Issues in Regard to Religion and Spirituality in Mental Health Treatment (3.5 CEUs)

What do you do when a devoutly spiritual client comes to you, wants to include their spirituality in their treatment and you are not very familiar with their spirituality? What ethical issues are raised by treating people from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds? What ethical issues arise when you, as a provider, have strong religious or spiritual beliefs?
This interactive training will help participants understand the ethical issues that may arise in treating client from different religious backgrounds and how religious competency is an ethical issue. Participants will learn how to address a client’s religion and spirituality in an ethical way, if and when it is ethical to incorporate it into treatment, and some common issues pertinent to treating clients from different religions. Luncheon Presentation, Self Care for Better Client Outcomes (1 CEU)

Self care is not a luxury, it is a necessity and an ethical duty. This workshop will discuss some of the common misconceptions about self care that make therapists vulnerable to impairment and burnout. In addition to discussing the ethical codes that support self care, this workshop will help the learners identify ways that they can practice self care in their lives.   (Trainer, Dr. Deidra A. Class 2 – Changing our Lousy Stories II: Designing the Constructs for Cultural Competence (3 CEUs)

In this training, we will look at the psychology and function of stereotypes. We will fine-tune our own awareness about how our brains unconsciously pull discordant constructs from our shared social history about groups of people. We will examine what we want to learn and unlearn. We will analyze the gifts and challenges of living in a diverse society. As an example, we will examine how the planned community of Columbia MD has spent the last 50 years trying (sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding) to create an integrated town, and consider ways to walk and work through distance, distrust and animosity.
