Clients living with substance misuse & addiction often have histories of emotional, physical and/or sexual trauma. Though 12 Step groups AA and NA are the most widespread and available peer support groups for addiction recovery, some approaches within this modality may be contraindicated for survivors of trauma. This training will help providers gain deeper insight surrounding the broadened definitions of trauma with examples throughout the lifespan and key principles of Trauma Informed Care. Participants will also explore the relationship between unhealed trauma and the development of substance use disorder, perspectives on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES); as well as analysis of the conventional language utilized in 12 steps programs through a trauma informed lens, studying alternative language options to promote healing empowerment & prevent re-traumatization.

Eryca Kasse is a clinical social worker in Washington, DC with a background in mental health, substance use and addiction. She received her BSW from George Mason University in 1998 with a focus in her early career on social work with youth in high-risk situations; runaway, homeless, LGBTQ & court involved. She received her MSW from Howard University in 2010 where she completed field placements with women returning home from prison & jail, and adults living with mental illness & addiction experiencing homelessness. Her post-graduate work has focused on clinical social work with adults living with co-occurring mental health & substance use disorders at community mental health centers, addiction treatment programs & hospitals; providing diagnostic assessments, individual & group therapy and crisis intervention. In 2016 she launched her consulting practice CHOICES in Healing & Recovery, which provides clinical supervision, CEU trainings and workshops for people in recovery focused on trauma informed care in behavioral health. CHOICES welcomes adults living with mental health & substance use disorders whether they choose abstinence from alcohol, drugs & behaviors or harm reduction, the 12 Step model of AA/NA or a non-spiritual recovery model; to take psychiatric medication, reduce or discontinue. CHOICES! In name and mission.
